What makes the WEF special?
The WEF is a way for Jewish women to come together to perpetuate their
concern for other women, to respond to women's needs and to involve women
of all ages. The WEF, through its granting program, will provide opportunities
to assist community organizations that are working in a wide variety of
ways to help women. Women of all gifting levels, will be offered the opportunity
to serve on the Granting Committee. The WEF provides a meaningful way
for men & women to honour a special individual, memorialize a family
member, or recognize a special occasion, while creating a legacy for future
generations. Through such a gift to the W.E.F you may recognize a mother,
daughter, sister, friend or any person who has greatly shaped your life.
Your gift expresses your respect for the values that they passed on to
you and for the concept of tzedakah.
How is the WEF different from the Women's Division
of the Combined Jewish Appeal?
The CJA can be seen as the community's chequing account. Principal is
raised annually and is entirely spent on the community's operating expenses.
The WEF, in contrast, can be seen as a savings fund where only the interest
on the principal will be spent, preserving the capital in perpetuity.
Can I make my commitment over time?
Yes. In order to have funds available for grants, we are encouraging payment
within 3 years, but can make provision for a longer payment period. Donations
can be made at levels of $100+, $1,000+ and $10,000+. Although the WEF
is seeking one-time initial gifts, donors can choose to add to their commitment
at any time.
Is the WEF separate from the Foundation's Community
Fund?
The WEF is a designated field of interest fund within the Foundation.
It will generate income that will always be used specifically for grants
that address a variety of compelling issues that affect women of all ages
in our community.
How does the granting process work?
The Granting Committee meets once a year to receive and review grant applications.
Their recommendations are presented to the Advisory Committee of the Women's
Endowment Fund and subsequently to the Board of Trustees of the Jewish
Community Foundation for ratification. Our sixth granting round will be
held in February 2006.
What compelling issues will the WEF fund?
